Recap of PPM Summit in California

Every year Daptiv participates in the Project and Portfolio Management Summit hosted by Everything Channel Events in Garden Grove, CA from June 14-17, 2009. The Project & Portfolio Management Summit is focused on uniting the PPM business community and Gartner Analysts in a business intensive format that allows participants to examine market trends, develop strategies for their business, and most importantly interact with vendors (that’s us!). The summit provided an opportunity for Daptiv to connect with attendees who were interested in or may already be using a PPM solution.

This year Daptiv was proud to be an Anchor Sponsor of the Summit. Six members of the Daptiv team were in attendance; Christian Smith – VP of Sales and Marketing, Dean Okazaki – Account Executive, Elizabeth Laramore – Sales Engineer, Melody Tomlinson – Online Marketing Manager, Rick Triplett – Enterprise Account Executive, and Tim Low – VP of Marketing.

Also in attendance on behalf of Daptiv were Addie Monson and Tom Bannon – two very wonderful individuals who work for Chase Paymentech, a customer of Daptiv’s. Addie and Tom accompanied us on the trip and presented to seven groups of Summit attendees about their uses of Daptiv PPM at Chase Paymentech. Addie and Tom’s presentation regarding workflow management and collaboration was a HUGE success and created much fan fare at our booth during exhibit times. You can learn more about how Chase Paymentech uses Daptiv PPM by reading their case study on Daptiv.com.

The highlight of our time at the Summit took place during the closing reception when awards were presented to vendors in four categories. Daptiv was named the winner of the ‘Project & Portfolio Management Innovation Award’. You can read more about our award here.

Other companies in attendance included: @Task, Compuware, Fujitsu, Microsoft, and Powersteering.

Daptiv Employee Spotlight: Brent Baumann

Brent Baumann, Application Engineer

I am a Washington native, born and raised here in the Seattle area. After graduating from Western Washington University in the late 90’s I left the area to travel the world for a few years. After settling in Scotland and Brazil for some time, I returned to Seattle in 2000 to join the IT ranks. I worked at Microsoft for 2 years and then went to work for an email and web content filtering company, Clearswift, for almost 4 years.

Looking for a change, I came to work here at Daptiv, where I’ve been for just over 3 years. I am a member of the Network Operations team, where I am responsible for customer implementations and udpates. I enjoy working closely with our customers on such varied, sometimes challenging implementations. I am proud to be a part of such a great team here at Daptiv, and I can’t wait to see what our company will offer next.

In my free time I enjoy traveling, biking, Seahawks football, and spending time with my family.

Daptiv Tips and Tricks: Using Visual Aids for Easier Report Creation

Visual Aids are a great way to allow for easier report creation.   The Visual Aids icon is located next to the lock/unlock icon.

By selecting an option such as “Show source type”, you can immediately know the source type of a field with the help of Visual Aids.  This becomes particularly important when you are creating a crosstab report and have a date field that you would like to Data Format.  Date fields in crosstabs will only respond to Data formatting when the source type is changed from a Member Caption source type to a Data Item Value source type.

This can be automatically seen by the changed icon next to the Data Item in the report.

You can also turn off “Show repeating” if you do not want to have repeating objects so the data item does not show in each row or in each column.

And lastly, if you have a report that has master detail relationships, it is useful to turn on “Show master detail relationships”.  In the example below, when using a repeater table to create a one page Project Status report with multiple objects, the Visual Aids will show an orange icon, indicating there is a master detail relationship.  When you hover over it, it will let you know what data items the relationship is based on.

Daptiv Customer Spotlight: Kleinfelder

Interview with Marc Stillman, Project Control Specialist

What drove your company to look into collaborative business software? What were your motivations, and what were your business needs?

Kleinfelder recently implemented a 2015 Strategic Direction with the mission to become a highly-competitive, billion-dollar, market-based company serving select clients around the world. In order to realize our goal of tripling in size within the next 5 years, it was determined that we needed to vastly improve our resource load-leveling capabilities. As an employee-owned company, we realized that it was critical to maximize our existing resource base across all market sectors and more efficiently manage our “just-in-time” hiring program.

At the same time, we were seeking ways to more effectively deliver quality projects to our outstanding clients through collaborative technologies. We did not want to impact our IT department with new delivery software implementations that are expensive and time-consuming, so we focused on the Software as a Service (SaaS) model. In summary, we required a solution that could meet our immediate resource management needs, and that was also capable of improving our long-term project delivery objectives.

What process did you go through to select a vendor?

We wanted an intuitive solution with powerful features for use by all levels of the organization, and flexible reporting to meet our executive management needs.

In addition to Daptiv, did you look into other collaborative business software providers? If so, which ones did you look into and why didn’t you choose them?

In addition to Daptiv, we evaluated:

Primavera. It is a powerful tool that is used extensively in our industry, but it is not user friendly and it‟s very expensive when migrated to the SaaS model.
Attask. In the sales evaluation process, they concentrated too much on the competition and not what their product can do for my company.
Clarity. Strong project management solution, but requires extensive setup timeframe and they were not willing to reduce minimum license

What do you like most about Daptiv (benefits of product, why Daptiv as a company is unique)?

Daptiv offered a great portfolio of basic and advanced functionality, competitive pricing, backed by dependable support capability. Although they are a relatively smaller company, they are recognized along with higher-priced Primavera and CA Clarity as a leader in the Gartner PPM Magic Quadrant doing business with customers worldwide. Daptiv‟s solution is highly configurable offering the simplest user-interface. They were the only vendor with the simplest and most flexible application licensing pricing model.

Daptiv PPM was the most intuitive, easy to use solution that seemed like the right fit for our company – Daptiv worked tirelessly during the evaluation process to answer our all questions and respond to every request. We've had a very good experience working with the people at Daptiv – everyone has a 'can do' attitude. You can tell that Daptiv employees are confident and committed to customer success. They approach work with enthusiasm.

How do you hope to use Daptiv PPM?

We will initially be using Daptiv PPM within Kleinfelder‟s Water and Transportation Divisions, and we hope to evaluate the PPM features quickly and see how other Divisions can leverage the solution. We plan to utilize the Capacity Planner for high-level resource planning, and will build customized trend analysis reports for use by our Project Managers and Executive Management team.
